NEW YORK, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Following up on Omnicom Group Inc.'s groundbreaking agreement with the New York City Council, BBDO, DDB, Merkley and PHD have finalized their negotiations today on an agreement with the New York City Commission on Human Rights. By entering into this agreement with the commission, the agencies are continuing their efforts to build a diverse workforce and a culture that promotes ideas, creativity and innovation in the multicultural mainstream marketplace.
Reverend Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network, noted, "This is an historic day in advancing our efforts to increase diversity in the advertising industry. I applaud John Wren and his companies for their continued efforts and for now setting the highest standard in the industry. Omnicom's commitment of people and financial support show why it is the market leader in the advertising world, they think and act big."
John Wren, Omnicom's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Our agreements with both the City Council and City Commission assure a long-term commitment that we believe will be tangible and effective in generating long-term solutions."
The agreement with the Commission follows Omnicom's September 8 announcement of a more than $2 million diversity initiative. Under that agreement, Omnicom and the City Council will create a Diversity Development Advisory Committee and establish an advertising, marketing skills and media industry curriculum at Medgar Evers College.
Larry Seabrook, Chair of the Civil Rights Committee of the New York City Council, observed, "By committing time and money, Omnicom has really shown that they are the industry leader and have made a significant commitment to the cause of diversity. I challenge the rest of the industry to join with Omnicom on the Diversity Development Advisory Committee and show the same commitment to diversity that Omnicom has shown."
